Hypnobirthing is a rather fancy name to describe a combination of techniques that will allow you to birth your baby with confidence – no matter how you birth. Hypnosis is a state that we all go in and out of many times a day, any time you are completely focused on one thing you are in a trance state. Practising taking your body into a deeply relaxed and focused state during your pregnancy will allow you to recreate this on the day of your baby’s birth.
The techniques you will learn are beneficial during pregnancy as will encourage your body to release endorphins (your feel-good hormone) which cross the placenta and are therefore experienced by your baby. Many women say that hypnobirthing empowered them and gave them not only confidence during pregnancy and birth but to follow their own instincts and intuition once they become a mother.
Clearing any fears
Many hypnobirthing classes do not face fears head-on. Yes listening to hypnosis MP3s and watching/reading about positive birth experiences will gradually shift your thinking and beliefs but if like me you have had a deep seated fear of birth since childhood focusing purely on the positive is not going to cut it. I teach techniques of how to actively clear your fears gently and swiftly.
What relaxes me might not work for you
I listened to other people’s hypnobirthing MP3s during my own pregnancy and one invited me to take a magic carpet ride and I immediately felt anxious! Really, really anxious, my heart rate quickened and I felt on edge. I couldn’t work out why until I realised that I link magic carpets with the scene from Disney’s Aladdin within the volcano!!!! You know when he is fleeing for his life. I used to play Sega Mega Drive and the magic carpet level was always the one I perished at!
My training in Cognitive Hypnotherapy ensures that I never put ideas in your head that may conflict with our end goal i.e. that you are relaxed and confident during pregnancy and birth. In my MP3s I might invite you to go to a safe relaxing place but you decide where that might be. Some people might hate beaches, the sound of the sea, sunshine etc. I agree with a friend that when she listens to relaxation MP3s that talk about the warm sun on your face her immediate thought is “Where is the factor 50!” Therefore I never invite you to imagine somewhere that might make you uncomfortable.
Any birth can be a positive experience
Some childbirth classes can make you feel that if you agree to pain relief or have a caesarean for example you have “failed” at having a natural birth. I have created this course to empower you. There is no failure, the safety and well-being of you and your baby is always our top priority. Our aim is for you to feel prepared and accepting of however your birth proceeds. Medical intervention can be a positive option when confidently chosen at the right moment. (Studies show that women who prepare using hypnobirthing techniques are less likely to need medical intervention, have calmer babies and recover from birth faster.)
Pain management/sensation control
I also teach pain management techniques. Most courses will not use the word pain and many hypnobirthing mums report that although their labours were intense they did not experience any pain. (I am now one of those mums, my son’s birth was hard work but I birthed drug and pain-free and actually enjoyed myself as I felt amazed at what my body had achieved.) Therefore you might prefer to refer to these as sensation control techniques and may not even need them. However having these tricks up your sleeve throughout pregnancy and childbirth can only be a good thing, plus they are a really fun thing to practice with your partner! (A client also used them during the first couple of weeks of breastfeeding.)
